Sweden's star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic on Wednesday said his side
outplayed France in a Euro 2012 match to prove to themselves they were a
first-class team, and to thank tens of thousands of fans who had
traveled to Ukraine to cheer them on.
"It was important that we win a game like this. We needed to go out
winners," Ibrahimovic said in post-game comments. "We showed that we
have a strong team. We can win against the best countries."
Sweden had already been eliminated from the competition and France
had almost qualified to advance to the quarterfinals even before the
match began, but the Scandinavians put in an intense performance and
defeated the French 2-0 in a Tuesday evening Kiev match.
"Today we put out a great performance. Today we got a good finish in
front of our supporters. And that's what we wanted to do," Ibrahimovic
said. "So that they didn't have to come down here for nothing. It feels
like we've been playing at home. I would like to thank them."
Ibrahimovic scored Sweden's first goal with an acrobatic volley and
won the man-of-the-match award. The game was played in Kiev's Olympic
stadium before a heavily Swedish crowd that cheered on their team with
songs and chants.
"We could have gone out there and played a match that was lazy. But
we came into this game and showed we wanted to win it," he said. "We
have World Cup qualification ahead and so this victory is a good start
for the future so to speak."
